Obesity-related hospital admissions rise by 30% - MEND responds

Harry Macmillan, Chief Executive of MEND, a social enterprise that works with the NHS to deliver child obesity treatment and prevention programmes, responds to the publication of Statistics on obesity, physical activity and diet: England 2011. He says:

“These figures show the shocking rise in the number of people having weight-loss surgery, a procedure that should always be a last resort.

“But with thousands more people across the UK suffering from obesity-induced conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, these figures fail to highlight the broader cost of obesity on our health service.

“Tackling the issue at childhood by providing families with the support they need to make healthy choices, is vital if we’re going to stop the human and economic pain of obesity.”
