You can't beat obesity by banning fizzy drinks

Dear Sir,

I sincerely hope that the Mayor will indeed look to America for valuable lessons when drawing up his anti-obesity strategy (Comment 11 June) – not simply the more controversial measures such as banning large soft drinks.

As Mr Johnson rightly points out – the obesity epidemic is costing a fortune and blighting lives in this country.   With one in three children overweight or obese in the UK, we cannot afford financially or socially to avoid tackling this issue head on.

Preventing further increases in obesity is clearly important.  However, there is now an overwhelming need for evidence-based treatments for those who are already overweight and obese – and who are the most at risk of developing painful and expensive chronic disease. I hope that the Mayor will take a fresh and comprehensive approach – learning from Mayor Mike and other work in the US but also from promising practice here in the UK. Next April’s ‘new and improved’ anti-obesity strategy in London cannot come soon enough.

Yours Sincerely,

Harry MacMillan,

CEO, MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition...Do it!)
